In commemoration of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, researchers have recreated the conditions of the natural disaster in a lab setting to study the impacts on marine life. The study found that the tsunami caused significant changes to the seafloor and had long-lasting effects on the genetic diversity of marine species.
In other news, a new cancer-fighting drug has been found to be effective in treating a type of leukemia. The drug, venetoclax, was used in combination with other treatments and resulted in a high rate of remission for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
Lastly, fossilized remains of a 20 million year old plant have been discovered in Germany. The plant, named « Schizolepis carinata, » provides insight into the climate and vegetation of the time period and is the first fossil of its kind to be found in Europe.
