The Romans experienced a significant decline in their intelligence quotient (IQ) due to high levels of lead pollution during the Roman Empire. Lead, a toxic metal, was widely used in various aspects of Roman daily life, such as cookware, water pipes, and cosmetics. The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, analyzed the lead levels in the bones of 131 individuals from different time periods. The results showed a substantial decrease in the population’s IQ during the Roman Empire due to the exposure to lead.
