Article: « La dette du Pérou envers les milliers de femmes stérilisées de force »

Response:
In the 1990s, the Peruvian government, led by President Alberto Fujimori, carried out a forced sterilization program targeting mostly poor, indigenous women. An estimated 272,000 women were sterilized between 1996 and 2000 as part of this program. Many of these women were coerced or misinformed about the procedure, leading to long-term physical and psychological consequences.

In 2021, a Peruvian court recognized the state’s responsibility in the forced sterilizations and ordered reparations for the victims. However, the government has yet to fully address this issue, and many women are still waiting for compensation and recognition of their rights. This situation highlights the ongoing struggle for justice and accountability regarding reproductive rights violations.
